INTERNET ADVERTISING QUICKLY RISING, RADIO RATES SLOWING
Advertising dollars are now moving towards the internet at a faster pace than traditional radio, according to a recent research finding. The report, delivered by eMarketer, estimated that year-end volumes for internet-based advertising will reach $16.4 billion this year, significantly up from $12.5 billion recorded last year.

Overall, the internet commands about 6 percent of the larger advertising pie, though eMarketer anticipates that it will eventually surpass traditional RADIO.

MORE DISCUSSION OF POSSIBLE SIRIUS, XM MERGER
Ahead of Christmas, the satellite radio sector is experiencing continued losses and softening subscriber gains. The downturn is darkening forecasts, though it could create the perfect conditions for a merger.

In earlier comments, Sirius Satellite Radio chief Mel Karmazin noted that "mergers often lead to creating shareholder value," and pointed to a softened regulatory LANDSCAPE.

JAY-Z SALES DROP SUBSTANTIALLY DURING SECOND WEEK
Jay-Z sales dropped considerably during the second week, landing at approximately 140,000 for the recent period. That raises the overall, two-week tally to nearly 822,000, a sub-platinum mark for the rapper. Rappers often suffer steep cliffs after first-week bursts, though the Jay-Z second-week sales result is disappointing.

The drop comes after a massive and ultra-expensive marketing blitz that included a big-budget video, a multi-city promotional splash, and massive consumer branding TIE-INS

NPR RATTLES OVER DEVICE-BASED FM TRASNMITTERS
The drama surrounding short-range, device-based FM transmitters is entering a new chapter, thanks to a recent complaint from National Public Radio. Bigger, commercialized radio stations are often higher on the dial, while public radio stations usually grab lower frequencies.

That is the same range tapped by device-based transmitters, which broadcast across lower, unused FREQUENCIES.

EMI TOES DRM-FREE WATERS, OFFERS NORAH JONES MP3 SINGLE
EMI is now offering a Norah Jones single in the open MP3 format, a monumental step for the label. The ultra-popular jazz pop singer is positioning the unrestricted single, "Thinking About You," on Yahoo Music, a move that bucks longtime label thinking on protection.

The development also follows a lengthy campaign by Yahoo Music executive David Goldberg, who has tirelessly rallied against the use of digital rights management on music FILES.

MULTI-FORMAT CONCERT BROADCASTING SOLDIERS ONWARD

After the show, fans will be able to grab the gig on-demand.

The concert will be available through the AOL Music Live imprint, a showcase for similar broadcasts involving My Chemical Romance, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Green Day, Alicia Keys, Coldplay, and USHER.

UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP, MORRIS COULD TARGET IPOD NEXT
Universal Music Group chairman Doug Morris successfully negotiated a royalty payment from Microsoft for every Zune sold. Now, the executive is eyeing a similar deal with Apple. "It would be a nice idea," Morris said during the Reuters Media Summit, happening this week in New York.

"I don't see why we wouldn't do that... but maybe not in the same way," Morris was quoted as saying while pointing to an upcoming renegotiation round. The comments came during a question-and-answer period on TUESDAY.

CHATTERS SURROUNDS POSSIBLE BEATLES, ITUNES DEAL
The Beatles remain elusive digital holdouts, despite recent licensing agreements with mega-groups like Dave Matthews Band and Linkin Park.

SIRIUS CHIEF FANS FLAMES ON XM MERGER SPECULATION
Will Sirius Satellite Radio eventually merge with its rival XM? The possibility has been floating for years, though recent comments from Sirius chief Mel Karmazin have fanned the flames once again. During an interview with Smart Money, Karmazin noted that "mergers often lead to creating shareholder value," something the chief executive has "always been open to".

Karmazin previously felt that regulatory hurdles would prohibit a marriage, though a number of variables have changed over TIME.

CBS EXECUTIVE EMBRACES YOUTUBE POSSIBILITIES
Major media companies have been saber-rattling around YouTube, yet one giant has dropped its weapons…at least for now. David Poltrack, chief research officer at CBS, recently told an audience that YouTube has not had a detrimental effect on overall business.

And Poltrack prefers that his content remain on YouTube, even if it was posted without permission. The comments, which came at the recent Future of Television Forum at NYU, surprised SOME.

UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP SUES MYSPACE, NEWS CORP.
Universal Music Group has recently issued an infringement lawsuit against MySpace, a development that follows tough talk from label chairman Doug Morris. Universal filed the action in the US District Court in Los Angeles late Friday, alleging that MySpace “harbors no illusions” that its destination contains infringing content.

The action also asserts that MySpace "knowingly and intentionally operated its business on the fiction that it has obtained the licenses it needs to exist from members that MySpace well knows are not the true copyright OWNERS."

EPIC, MTVU SPIN COLLEGE-BASED ARTIST COMPETITION
Everyone has encountered a "Battle of the Bands" at some point in their lives, usually at the local level. Now, a number of players are broadening the concept, both online and off. Just recently, university-focused mtvU established alliances with a number of labels, including Epic, Epitaph, Drive-Thru and Definitive Jux Records.

Collectively, mtvU and the labels will deliver a contest to find the best campus band. The initiative, called "Best Music on Campus," or BMOC, is a play on the age-old phrase, "Big Man on CAMPUS."
